Farewell Talk

Ethan's farewell talk for anyone that wants to be spiritually enlightened. The closing Hymn was especially appropriate, cause these young missionaries are the Hope of Israel as they go forward on the front line of God's army!

Good morning brothers and sisters! This isn’t really the farewell talk that I had imagined, but it’s better than nothing. I’m so grateful to be here and see all of your smiling faces (this is funny because everyone is wearing masks and I am unable to see their faces)

So if you didn’t know, my name is Elder Ethan Wride. I was born and raised here. In March of this past year I got called to serve in the Dominican Republic Santiago mission speaking spanish, and since then have been temporarily reassigned to the St. Louis Missouri mission. I am beyond excited to go out and serve. If the only option for my mission were to be to serve in Salt Lake City for two years, I would still do it.

For my talk today, I want to talk about my testimony, which I have learned to acquire through faith, prayer, and turning my life and my desires completely over to the Lord. The spirit has been strongest in my life when I testify, so that’s kinda what I want to do today as well. I have often been very impacted by testimonies I’ve heard, whether they be from parents, grandparents, friends, siblings, aunts, uncles, etc. This is also why I’ve loved being a missionary so much. My heart and my mind are very clear, and I have no doubts about the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Of course I have questions, as do we all, but no doubts.

Before my mission, I was in a tough spot. I remember walking out of a lesson in seminary and thinking “man God is so good” and being super hyped to serve my mission. During my next class, we learned about hinduism and buddhism and suddenly, in that 1 hour and a half, I thought I lost my testimony. I can’t explain it, but suddenly nothing made sense and I had serious doubts. I mean the Quran is a book, just like the Book of Mormon is. Why isn’t that the word of God?

During the eight hours after school ended, I was totally broken. I remember crying in my bed and not knowing how my life was gonna play out all of the sudden. If I don’t have a testimony I can’t go on a mission, and if I don’t go on a mission I have to go to school, and if I go to school I can’t go to BYU, and if I didn’t go to BYU how would I pay for school, and so on and so forth. It was a dark and scary feeling. I remember going downstairs to tell my dad how I felt. He was gonna be heartbroken! Instead of reacting the way I thought he would, he just smiled at me. I’ve had this reaction from him with lots of things, and in the past it has made me way mad. Couldn’t he see this was a big problem! After talking for a bit he just said, “I know it’s true”. It was said with such confidence that even though I was confused, I was able to hold on to that. He then offered to say a prayer with me that I would be able to get my witness of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon that I had always wanted, and promised me that I would get it if I kept going. This experience with my dad, as well as countless others, gave me more strength to keep going even if I was confused. I still wasn’t satisfied, but I had enough faith to keep going. I still had faith in God and Jesus Christ as I always had, but I didn’t understand why (in my mind) they didn’t keep their promises.

So, fast forward a couple weeks, coronavirus started to break out, and suddenly my glorious senior year full of sleeping in and procrastinating had come to an end. I was working then part-time at a music studio, and I remember talking to the director. He was pretty straightforward with me, and when I told him I was planning on going straight out on the mission he was like “people should wait to go on missions until they’re mature” and then sarcastically looked at me and said “so keep that in mind”. He then kept expressing his concern that going out right from high school increased my chances of going home early. Talking more with other people, it annoyed me that not everyone thought I was as ready as I thought I was, and I wanted to prove myself.

Then, an opportunity came to go sell pest control in california for the rest of my senior year until I started my mission. I knew this was my chance to prove I was a man and could do hard things, but if I’m gonna be totally honest, I really didn’t want to do it. My dad had me make a list of pros and cons of going forward with the experience. My pros list included only two things:
  1) Make bank
2) Become a man.
My con list however was massive. I wrote things down like:
1) I already have two jobs
2) I would have to pay for my own food in california
3) Bowling alleys are reopening
4) I’m not in a financial crisis right now
5) I’d be away from my friends
6) I want to hang with the fam before I leave
7) They don’t have enough room in the dorm (which was true. I spent the two months on the floor)
8) I Feel like I would suck at sales
9) The pay is all commission
10) Lancaster CA is ugly
11) I have to give my graduation speech
12) I’d miss the end of my senior year
And finally, at the top of the cons list, the most tragic of all that single handedly most nearly kept me from going was that 13 - my friend Geroge was getting a hot tub. I remember hearing this and my heart just dropped. The pain was too much. I couldn’t go.

Instead of turning my will to the Lord and doing what I knew he would probably want me to do, I was going to do what was more comfortable for me in that moment. I remember my dad trying to talk me into it saying “would 14 year old Ethan be more excited to become the version of you working hard in california or the one sitting in George’s hot tub?”.
I then answered truthfully saying “he would probably rather be in the hot tub”. Which, if you remember me at 14, was a true statement.
That night I was positively not going, when I received a text message from my Grandpa Wride that completely changed the man I was preparing myself to become. He said.
“Thoughts:
I was thinking about your upcoming mission today and for some reason the lines of the poem I earlier shared with you came to my mind, (this isn’t the full poem, but you can look it up online. Christmas Eve on the Desert by Harrison R. Merrill)

Tonight, not one alone am I but three —
The Lad I was the Man I am, and he
Who looks adown the coming future years
And wonders at my sloth. His hopes and fears
Should goad me to the manly game
Of adding to the honor of my name.
I’m Fate to him — that chap that’s I, grown old,
No matter how much stocks and lands and gold
I save for him, he can’t buy back a single day
On which I built a pattern for his way.
I, in turn, am product of that Boy
Who rarely thought of After Selves. His joy
Was in the present. He might have saved me woe
Had he but thought. The ways that I must go
Are his. He marked them all for me
And I must follow — and so must he —
My Future Self — Unless I save him!
Tonight, not one alone am I but three —
The Lad I was, the Man I am, and he
Who is my Future Self — nay, more,
I am HIS savior — that thought makes me four!

Just as quickly as I had decided not to go because of George's hot tub, I knew I was going. I am my future’s savior, and I owe it to him to work hard now. Since then, I’ve looked at that pros and cons list very differently. Based on what I had written, both the pros and cons list could have been described as this:
Cons for going: I’m lazy and I don’t want to grow up
Pros for going: Become the man that I’d fondly like to be

Within seconds after reading the text from my grandpa, I told my dad I was going to do it, and that Monday I left for California with my older brother Joseph and our friend Talmage. The journey to manhood had begun.

It was a pain in the butt! Walking in the sun all day in the hood of california selling pest control to people who kind of looked like the bugs I was trying to get rid of, broke me. I had multiple experiences getting raged at. In spanish it wasn’t so bad, but getting yelled at in english hurt. Basically, it broke me, and one day I spent a good 30 minutes just crying on the side of the road. I know I will have lots more experiences like this, especially on the mission. Even though it sucked, it was great mission prep and I’m super grateful for that experience.

Perhaps more rewarding than the mission prep of talking to random people all day was the large chunks of time I had each day to study in the scriptures. For over a year I hadn’t missed a day reading the Book of Mormon. I really believed the church was true, but still didn’t feel comfortable to look someone in the eyes and say “I know it’s true”. I was craving for one overwhelming experience where I would know it’s true.

There was one Sunday in CA that I spent reading the Book of Mormon. I read most the day until I finished the whole book over again. I prayed to God that night, ready to feel an angel spiritually slap me or something. I had done it, and it was time for the Lord to do his part. Well, I didn’t get the answer I was looking for, and I was angry.
Even though I didn’t get an answer, I kept reading the next day. I can’t describe it, but I really started to read with an open mind and an open heart. That day, I really did know it was true and realized that I had known it was true all along.

In Moroni 10:4-5 he doesn’t say “if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, having real intent, with faith in Christ, You will hear a voice say, ‘hey buddy, it’s true!’”. He says he’ll do it by the power of the Holy Ghost, not specifying exactly how, or when. God reveals truths to us in the way that he knows will sustain us the longest and be the best for us in our lives.

My answer that the Book of Mormon is true wasn’t unique either. In reading the book “Saints”, there are lots of conversion stories. I was struck and intrigued by the fact that most of the witnesses that the Book of Mormon was true people received were just like mine, but with a whole lot more faith and consequence. They read it, prayed about it, and then asked God if it was true. They felt in their hearts that it was true, so they left their homes, submitted themselves to unlawful and horrendous persecution, and lived lives hated by much of the world in that area. What a sacrifice. No other book can do that.

This had been my problem. I wasn’t turning my will and my life fully over to God. I was waiting for that one incredible experience where it felt like the heavens were open and I felt all warm and fuzzy inside and maybe even heard a voice, but that’s not what I needed. God and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith for our learning and benefit too, not just Joseph Smiths. We can be as strongly impacted by that experience as Joseph Smith was. I had always had all the tools I needed to see my testimony, I just needed to use them. There is also another problem with the idea of getting one super powerful experience. Yes they are super exciting and can greatly build testimonies, but I’ve come to learn that there is no spiritual experience so strong or so powerful that it alone can sustain your testimony throughout your whole life. There just isn't. Look at Joseph Smith for an example. He had likely the most glorious and divine spiritual experience of anyone who has ever lived on earth, and yet he continued to learn line upon line, precept upon precept, every day. As amazing as that experience was, it didn’t stop him from having questions, and he knew that there was more to learn and to feel. Our testimonies don’t have a maximum capacity. They can always reach higher, and if we do those daily things, they always will.

Another thing I find interesting in Joseph Smith’s first prayer, is that I believe if God and Jesus Christ hadn’t appeared to him, he wouldn’t have stopped trying to get an answer. He would have continued to look for truth even if he didn’t get an answer when he asked for it. It’s hurt me in the past to hear about and talk to friends who tell me that they’ve prayed with all their heart to know if it was true, and they didn’t get an answer when they expected. Without giving much time for God to even answer, they quickly abandoned ship and declare that “it isn’t true”, and in more extreme cases, “I know it isn’t true”. This is likely why God didn’t answer them right away in the first place! If they were that quick to abandon hope of getting an answer, an answer right then wouldn’t have given them a sustainable witness of it’s truthfulness. The Lord loves effort. It takes more work, like Moroni says in Ether 12:6.

“I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith”

For many, the trial of faith is pushing through those moments when the heavens seem closed and God doesn’t seem to care to answer, but I also know that it can also be stepping into the dark and taking a leap of faith with your testimony. Bearing witness of something you don’t fully know of yourself, but having faith that you’ll find your testimony on the way. I’ve done this too, and as I testify, even if it’s to a fake investigator, the spirit is there. With the right heart, you cannot teach someone about the gospel and not feel the spirit.

I testify that, sooner or later, God answers our prayers. He really does hear them. Reading in the Book of Mormon lately has been super interesting to me as well. It’s easy for us, as the reader, to be more critical of those mentioned in the scriptures and their faith. In Mosiah 21, Limhi’s people are in bondage of the lamanites, and in verse 14-15 it says

“14  And [the people of Limhi] did humble themselves even in the depth of humility; and did cry mightily to God; yea, even all the day long did they cry unto their God that he would deliver them out of their afflictions.
15  And now the Lord was slow to hear their cries because of their iniquities; nevertheless the Lord did hear their cries, and began to soften the hearts of the Lamanites that they began to ease their burdens; yet the Lord did not see fit to deliver them out of bondage.”

If I were the people of Limhi, I would be upset. I would not see how the Lord was helping and I would feel angry for not being delivered. If the lamanites gave me lighter loads, I don’t think I would have correlated it to an answer of prayer, but instead just good luck. But, as the reader, we clearly see that the Lord did hear their prayers and did answer it in his own infinite wisdom. I think of our own situation as a church with this coronavirus as well. If someone back then were recording our situation, they might say something like:

And the [saints of the latter-days] did humble themselves even in the depths of humility; and they did cry mightily to God; yea, even all the day long did they cry unto their God that he might take away the coronavirus, deliver them from their afflictions, and bring the world back to normal.
And now the Lord was slow to hear their cries because of the iniquities of the world and the lesson he still wanted to teach them; that of the importance of families, temples, and the gathering of Israel; nevertheless, the Lord did hear their cries, and began to reopen the temples, send missionaries back out into the field, reopen the churches, and continue the gathering of Israel; yet the Lord did not see fit to take away the coronavirus.

Brothers and sisters, if only we could see how closely and how personally the Lord is involved in each one of our lives! I testify that he hears our prayers and he wants to answer them! If only we could read our own books of our life, and see how close the Lord was there all along. I’m sure if we had those records, we would also be embarrassed at the ways we acted at times, in our mortality, failing to see how closely we were being cared for.

Just as I was struggling with knowing if I had a testimony and whether or not my prayers were being heard, I know we all have our own questions and prayers that may feel like they aren’t being heard or answered, but I witness that they are being heard, and they are being answered, all according to the infinite wisdom of our loving Heavenly Father, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. Jeffery R. Holland said

“Some blessings come soon, some come late, and some don’t come until heaven; but for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come.”

Upon my return from california, I was a changed man. I had learned more about the real world, my bribing skills, and hard work. It was such a rich and rewarding experience that I genuinely miss. The night I came home and for the entire next week, I sunk into mental depression. I walked away from thousands of dollars to go bowl with my friends who hadn’t changed a bit since I’d seen them last. Of course I missed them, but I wanted to make bank. I remember asking my friend Truman “what did I miss?” and he responded “absolutely nothing”. We didn’t bowl very well that night either, which made it even worse. Also George didn’t even get the hot tub finished while I was gone, so staying would have been a complete waste. The hot tub at the apartment complex we stayed at in california was open though, so really the whole pest control venture was a win-win.

Just as I have felt an increase of God’s presence in my life the past couple months, I know that the mission will continue to do that for me. I feel the gospel burn in my chest as I learn more, and the greatest desire I have right now is to share it with others. In a zoom lesson I taught recently to a lady I met in California, she said through tears that the Book of Mormon is “feeding her soul”. That’s what the gospel does, and that’s what the Book of Mormon does.
Jacob 2:8 says

“And it supposeth me that they have come up hither to hear the word of God, yea, the word which healeth the wounded soul”

The gospel heals people and hearts. The work is so real and so important. During my first zoom lesson as a missionary, we were shown before and after pictures of people who joined the church. The changes were incredible. It was the same person, but so different. So much confidence. You could clearly see the change that had happened inside their souls, and the healing that Christ had done.

I have also learned the importance of scripture study. They testify of false spirits and false prophets in the last days, and that there would be many. Putting on the armour of God every day by reading the scriptures and praying protects us from falling into these traps that have been set before us. We all have missions to fulfill here on earth, and each of us has an essential role in the plan of our heavenly father for the eventual return of his son Jesus Christ to the earth.

Perhaps one of my favorite scriptures is in Moses 1:6. The line simply says:
“And I have a work for thee, Moses, my son…”
In my scriptures I have Moses’ name crossed out and above it I have my name written. For me, it reads, “And I have a work for thee, Ethan, my son.”. All of our names can take that place as well. We all have work to do.

I have a testimony of Joseph Smith. I testify and promise that he was a prophet called of God to restore the true church and true gospel of Jesus Christ in these latter days. He wasn’t a perfect man, but he was a great man, who’s sole desire was to please the Lord and do his will. He was a humble man. I recently started reading the book “Saints” and am amazed at the faith and sacrifices of our ancestors. One of my favorite lines in that book is as follows:

Emma often acted as Joseph’s scribe after he began translating the record. One day, while he translated, Joseph suddenly grew pale. “Emma, did Jerusalem have a wall around it?” he asked. “Yes,” she said, recalling descriptions of it in the Bible. “Oh,” Joseph said with relief, “I was afraid I had been deceived.”2
This line in and of itself truly describes the prophet Joseph Smith. He had no education and no money. I am so confused as to how people think the Book of Mormon came about. Like, bruh, come on, Joseph was a prophet. Nobody can just write the Book of Mormon! There is no middle ground. Joseph Smith was either a prophet, or he wasn’t, and the Book of Mormon is either true, or it’s not! But yes, he was a prophet and anyone who truly studies will know that as well and will not be able to deny it. Had Joseph Smith been a false prophet, the church would not be as strong and as good as it is today. By their fruits ye shall know them, and Joseph Smith was a prophet. Through him, the Book of Mormon was translated and through that book, we are able to draw nearer to God than any other way.

I can say without a shadow of a doubt in my mind that the Book of Mormon is true. I know it, I know that God knows I know it, and I will not deny it.

I’ve had people tell me regarding my mission that they are “so glad it’s you and not me”. Well, if I’m being completely honest, I’m also so glad it’s me and not them. What better time in the world is there than now to go and proclaim the restored gospel! It’s such a blessing. The uncertainty of how my mission will look is not something I am scared about. I know that the Lord wants me out there right now and he will make use of the time I’m giving him.

Revelation 12:7-10 says
“And there was a war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels”
Michael and his angels. That was us. We fought alongside Michael, and we won. When teaching how we did overcome satan, we read in verse 11
“And they overcame him by the blood of the lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto death”
The three primary things that assisted our defeat against satan was the blood of the lamb, the word of our testimonies, and loving not our lives unto death. In other words, by faith in Jesus Christ and his atonement, bearing testimony, and loving the things of God more than their own lives. This is how we won the first time, and it’s how we’re going to win again. Whether serving missions or not, we all have a crucial role in the gathering of israel.

I am especially thankful for great parents and the way they raised me. We didn’t always get along, but they’ve given me everything necessary to get me at this point of serving a mission and I don’t see how I would be here without them and what they taught me.

I wish I could talk more and keep teaching, but I’ll have the next two whole years to do that. If you remember anything from this, remember that Ethan Wride knows without a doubt that the church is true, and all who truthfully seek will also know.

Alma 5:44 and 48
For I am called to speak after this manner, according to the holy order of God, which is in Christ Jesus; yea, I am commanded to stand and testify unto this people the things which have been spoken by our fathers concerning the things which are to come

I say unto you, that I know of myself that whatsoever I shall say unto you, concerning that which is to come, is true; and I say unto you, that I know that Jesus Christ shall come, yea, the Son, the Only Begotten of the Father, full of grace, and mercy, and truth. And behold, it is he that cometh to take away the sins of the world, yea, the sins of every man who steadfastly believeth on his name.

Week 5 - MTC: Hola Ninos

What a weekkkkk

I wasn’t gonna send one out this week but had a spiritual experience (of course) so I feel like I have to share it. I had lots of nonsense funny stories I’ll share a little bit this week as well, but I’m gonna mostly keep it spiritual. Sorry these are so long, I just have nothing better to do right now

This week I finally hit the point where online MTC became a bit of a pain. I’ve loved it, but I've started to go a little crazy being in the basement looking at a computer screen all day. The whole district is kinda feeling it too. It’s just hard to be a missionary by yourself in your basement for 6 weeks. Things that are so dumb I just laugh hysterically at, like can’t stop laughing/crying. And at the worst times too! Me and Elder Hansen were teaching a spanish TRC and spanish was just not working in our brains that day and we sounded very stupid. Elder Hansen tried to tell the lady we were teaching that he’s a “bit tired” which in spanish is “un poco cansado” but accidentally said “un puku cansado” and I absolutely lost it during the lesson. I was laughing so hard I had to mute myself and look away from the camera, and then Elder Hansen couldn’t stop laughing so we were both laughing and crying and yea it was horrible. They record all the TRC lessons so I’m trying to get a copy of our horrible lesson. Worst 20 minutes of my life. Finally she just pretended she had to go and left. She also wrote on the response form that she felt “uncomfortable”. Nice job Elders!!! They should designate a time every week for missionaries to watch clean comedy sketches to keep our sense of humor in check. I’m kinda scared I’m gonna come back with a sense of humor as weird as my older brother Josephs. (no offense Joe!)

So as a lot of you know, I really struggle to get up in the mornings. I don’t know exactly why, but I think it has something to do with jazz band. Jazz band at school was just absolutely horrible and I had to wake up at 5:30 to be there on time, so I hardly ever went. I can get up fine if I have something to look forward to, but jazz band wasn’t one those things so I formed bad habits of sleeping in every day. Anyways, one of the hardest things for sure with online MTC has been getting up at 6:30 in the morning. After sleeping in a couple times, I started to get really frustrated with myself so I had to take things to the extreme.

About two years ago I watched this thing on shark tank called the “pavlok”. It’s basically a watch that electrocutes you in the morning to wake you up. You can set the shock to 10% or to 100%, and boy it hurts. It also has a vibration setting and a beeping setting. When I first got it, I used to set the zap for 100% repetitively. But, instead of giving me a burst of energy though like I thought it would, it made me hecka mad and I’d pick it up chuck it at the wall while still being asleep. So then I started duct taping it to my wrist, so I couldn’t take it off, and the only way to turn it off is by doing jumping jacks or turning it off with my phone, which I had put in a hiding spot where I wouldn’t have time to get it. With the jumping jacks, it has a setting where it can tell if you’re doing them so if you’re not doing them well you get zapped more but if you do them really fast it will eventually turn off. That didn’t work either. I would do the jumping jacks but be even more furious for getting zapped AND having to work out so after it stopped zapping me I just went back to bed. Also one day I was so mad I cut the wristband off. I had to order a new one.

But the other night I had a revelation. Almost more painful than getting zapped for me is the thought of getting zapped. I want to avoid it at all costs. My plan is as follows:
I set two alarms. One for 6:29 and one for 6:30. The 6:29 alarm vibrated at 100% and the 6:30 alarm would zap me at 100%. So what I did is I locked my phone in the bathroom close to my bed. I turned the jumping jacks setting off, so the only way to turn the alarm off was by getting the phone (which is locked in the bathroom). I then took the key to getting into the bathroom all the way upstairs and placed it in the farthest place I could. I also duct taped the pavlok with many layers to my wrist. This plan is genius, because at 6:29 I will feel the vibration, warning me that I have less than 1 minute to sprint upstairs, get the key, unlock both the doors to get into the bathroom where I put my phone, and turn the 6:30 alarm off before I get zapped. The adrenaline rush that would take place would be enough to fully wake me up, and by the time I’ve sprinted around the whole house, I will have enough energy to start the day. Genius right!?

Well it took some trial and error. The first night I did it, I was so excited I couldn’t fall asleep. But then I started to get super scared. What if I slept through the vibration and got zapped? During the night, the pavlok started blinking. I don’t know why, but it just started to blink. It was close to my face, and the blinking woke me up. I thought I had one minute to live, so instantly I sprinted upstairs and started to do the routine saying “crap crap crap” under my breath. Then as I was going, I realized that I hadn’t felt an actual vibration. I checked my watch and sure enough, it was 1:30 am. So, I went back to bed. At this point I was even more scared, and at 3:30 am I still wasn’t asleep, so I realized the only way I was gonna fall asleep was by taking the watch off.
Although it failed the first time, the system is more refined now and working pretty well. Instead of setting the vibration for 6:29 I set it for 6:28 because 1 minute to do all of that is a little ambitious. I also put the key a little bit closer than where it was before. But anywho, that is my new system for getting up and it’s working fabulously.

Also this week my grandparents went up to bear lake with my family so I didn’t have a place to stay for a bit. My brother from another motha Elder Smith said I could stay at his house, but my dad ended up not going so he just stayed with me at my grandparents house and we had a good time. I finally was able to get my passport sent in to be renewed and they said it will be here in 3-6 months. Yahoo! The lady said they are behind over 2 million passports so it’s gonna be a bit. Either way I’m stoked to serve in Missouri until I get to the DR. God is real and my testimony keeps getting stronger. There’s no such thing as a testimony that’s had enough nourishment. You can always reach higher. And you always have to, because if you don’t nourish it, you lose it. My dad was telling me about this old guy on his mission who was a former mission president, former stake president, etc., and when asked for help about a project that needed to be done, he said something like “just take care of it. I’ve been serving the Lord my whole life. I’m tired, and I want to relax.”. Well whupdeedoo because a few months later he got excommunicated for committing adultery. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in the MTC, it’s that there’s no such thing as one spiritual experience that will sustain you for your whole life. It’s something you have to do daily, line upon line, precept upon precept, until you're safely dead. Satan looks for those moments when we’re vulnerable, so we always need to suit up with the armour of God. The church is true baby!

Speaking of musicals, I watched saturday's warrior this week. That show is awesome. The “Circle of Our Love” song has been stuck in my head all week. And I’m not complaining.

Okay now for a spiritual moment! So I’m just gonna tell all of you guys the story about Frieda if you haven’t heard it already…

So it was my first day knocking doors for dewey pest control in Lancaster, CA. Lancaster, by the way, sucks. It’s hot, gross, and people are getting stabbed in the street every night. The nice thing though is that they have lots of bugs (shoutout to my boys earwigs and cockroaches who helped pay for my college), so it’s good for selling. Anyways on my first day I was at zero. The only day I ever got zero but I was super mad. Anywho I knocked on this door and nobody came out for like a minute. I started to walk away and then the door opened so I ran back, did my pitch, and the old lady who answered the door said she has the bugs but has no money. She looked like she’d been crying and was wearing a towel on her head as well as a bath robe, likely just in the shower. She then proceeded to tell me about her situation. Broke, family either dead or left her, etc. She then talked for literally 20 minutes about coronavirus conspiracy theories (shoutout to George Lewis) and I wanted to dip. Instead of leaving though, I felt prompted to ask her if she wanted help doing yard work that sunday. I fought the prompting wanting to dip and make bank, but it kinda just came out of my mouth without much control on my part. She looked surprised, and said “really?”. Too late to back out now even though I would rather spend my Sunday sleeping, I said “of course”. “Out of the goodness of your heart?” she said. “Of course” I repeated. She started to break down into tears and said that she had just been praying to God that he would help her when I had knocked. We talked some more and she said “you’re mormon aren’t you?”. Of course I’m an idiot and pulled the “NOOOO actually I’m a member of the CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS”. After she talked my ear off about coronavirus I finally dipped feeling happy but also annoyed at myself for ruining my sunday nap session (as ashamed as I am to admit it. The natural man is the worst!). I had made zero sales and one yardwork appointment.

That sunday me, my older brother Joseph, and the man the myth the legend and driver of the humble toyota prius mr Talmage Morgan went to do yardwork. Of course, religion came up. We all shared our testimonies in subtle ways and answered the questions she had about the church. She even had a Book of Mormon the missionaries some time ago had given her. We went through it together, and eventually we were all inside teaching her. I read her the recent restoration proclamation issued by the church and we told her to read the Book of Mormon. We got her number and gave it to the missionaries in that area, but after following up with the missionaries they said they were never able to contact her.

I had almost forgotten about Frieda until this past week when the memory of her and other people I’d talked to about the church in cali came into my head. I didn’t want to disappoint the Lord by ignoring that thought/prompting, knowing if I did he would stop giving me them, so I called those who I thought of right away during the middle of class. Frieda picked up right away, which was a miracle because no one was able to get a hold of her before then. I thought maybe it was the wrong number. She recognized who I was right away. “You're that Mormon boy!”. Which, do not fear, I corrected her and said…… . ACTUALLY I’M A MEMBER OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS. I asked her if me and my companion could teach her. She accepted right away, and we scheduled an appointment via zoom. I sent her a follow up email inviting her to do some personal study in the Book of Mormon, as well as quoting 2 Nephi 25:26, which emphasizes the importance of Jesus Christ in our church.

"26 And we atalk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we bprophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our cchildren may know to what source they may look for a dremission of their sins."

She responded with “God brought us into each others lives. Don’t believe in coincidence.”
Well I’ll be darned because before our lesson she read the introduction, testimony of the three and eight witnesses, as well as all the way up to 1 Nephi chapter 5! LESSGOO! Not even our TRC people we’re teaching do that much off the first invitation.

As we were preparing the lesson, I mentioned to Elder Hansen that we should share the scripture in Isaiah that talks about Joseph Smith and the gold plates. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, basically a prophecy in the bible about how martin harris took translations of the book of mormon and the guy said he couldn’t read it because the book was sealed etc. Essentially, it’s a scripture from the Bible that 100% testifies of Joseph Smith and the restoration in an insane amount of detail. “This will totally convince her the church is true” was how I thought about it. Elder Hansen then said that “we don’t want to prove to her that it’s true, we want her to feel that it’s true”. That hit me hard because it’s so true. If you asked me, I could send you pages of insane miracles and literal hard proof and evidence that THIS IS ALL TRUE and that will not get you a sustaining testimony. You will NOT gain a testimony off of those cold facts. You gain a testimony through humility, faith, and prayer. You feel that’s true in your heart, which is where ultimately all the important feelings we have with heaven come from. Those evidences that it is true are super helpful, but you need a testimony of faith and prayer first.

Anyways, the beginning of the call was brutal. Her internet connection was so bad that we couldn’t hear anything. Me and Elder Hansen were both just kinda looking at each other on the zoom since she was frozen most of the time and I messaged him and told him to say a prayer. I prayed too. I’ve never had my heart burn that badly in wanting to teach someone. I know she will know our message is true, but fricking zoom is a clown and wouldn’t work. After we both prayed in our hearts Elder Hansen told me to turn her video off. It instantly fixed all of the audio. We could hear her even though we couldn’t see her and that was good enough.

We taught about the Book of Mormon and first vision. The spirit was strong. Even over zoom! I’ve been feeling like 100% of the spirit 24/7 though so I wasn’t in tears but I could feel the spirit. Frieda told us about her life story and how she found the Bible. She told us about her born again experience at 19 and knowing it was true. At the end of the lesson I said holding my nametag up to the camera. “I am representing Jesus Christ. I promise you, on his behalf, that if you continue to read the Book of Mormon and ask God with a sincere heart if it’s true, you will have an experience even more powerful than the one you had at 19. You will feel a closeness to God that you haven’t felt before.” It was really neat making that promise. I wanted to be guided by the spirit, but as the words that God put into my head came out, I knew it was real! It’s really not my promise, it’s the Lords, and it will be answered. He doesn’t break promises. It was hard because we couldn’t see her, but following Elder Hansen’s testimony, she said, clearly through tears and a trembling voice, that the Book of Mormon was “feeding her soul”, as she put it.

I thought that was so beautiful. That’s what Jesus Christ does. He’s the master healer. Reminds me of Jacob 2:8
“And it supposeth me that they have come up hither to hear the pleasing word of God, yea, the word which healeth the wounded soul.”

After her comments, we invited her to say the closing prayer. She continued to whimper during the prayer. It was really moving. She asked God to bless us on our missions and said how she knew they wouldn’t be in vain. She thanked God for sending us into her life. During all of this I was feeling an incredible amount of the love God has for this woman. She’s old, has had tons of trials, is living alone, has a smoking problem haha, but more than anything she wants to follow Jesus Christ. She said when she got baptized at 19 (not sure for which church, not ours though) that since she didn’t know exactly how to be baptized that she had them baptize her multiple times in different ways just to make sure they could get it right. (Which, we’re gonna have to do that again haha, but that was also really touching). What an amazing person!!! I don’t have a doubt in my mind that she will receive an answer to the promise she was given, because she is going to go through the work to get there. I’m not entirely excited to teach her that smoking is bad, but I have full trust that whether in this life or the next, she will fully embrace the restored gospel. After the lesson Elder Hansen told me how “man so this is why people love missions so much!”.

The plan is that me and Elder Hansen are gonna teach her for as long as we can, and then I’m gonna send the Lancaster missionaries over to her house to take care of the rest. Please please please keep Frieda in your prayers. Bless that her heart will be opened to what the Book of Mormon is teaching about Jesus, Families, and the happiness that we’re all capable of receiving. I know that God answers prayers.

Sorry that was long, but I felt like I had to share it. If you skipped all of that, shame upon you. Just kidding, it's all good haha.

Man the church is so true. I feel like crying all day every day because I know it’s real. I feel it burning in my chest. Sometimes I’ll be reading in the scriptures or somewhere else, and I get so happy that I just clap as loud as I can followed by a “WOO” and look around me wanting to share to someone what I just felt. Then I talk to myself haha. Side note. But anyways, I’m in love with this feeling. What was originally something that made me depressed is getting me all psyched up. I get to do nothing but teach about Jesus for two years. That is awesome.

I really just want you all to know that I testify that the church is real. If you remember anything about Ethan Wride, remember that he had a testimony of Jesus Christ and the importance of the work.

Week 4 - MTC: Over halfway done lets goooo

Hey what is up

This week wasn’t that exciting either. Just the same old zoom stuff. If anyone needs tips/hacks for zoom to make your calls interesting, hit me up. I figured out how to automatically freeze myself too so if I get called on and don’t know an answer I use that. Also I got glasses so don't be alarmed by the pictures.

1 - Bad TRC
2 - Spanish jokes
3 - How da spanish is goin
4 - District Battle
5 - guys with the boys
6 - New investigators/people interesting in learning more about the restored gospel
7 - testimony

1 - Me and Elder Hansen taught some TRC’s this week and absolutely botched them. I guess we just had the idea that the spirit would “guide” us in our lesson as an excuse to not prepare and watch safety zone. Turns out, if you don’t prepare, the spirit can’t help you teach! Who would have thought?! Our second lesson with “Rebeccah” went from: angels, to the apostasy, to Moroni 10:4-5, to the first vision, and then we ended it off with a little discussion about the millennium. Then we invited her to pray or something. Pretty dope lesson eh? Well I think she was confused, and so were we. After you do a TRC you have to fill out a form putting your answers as what you think the person you taught put, and then they send you an email comparing them. Screen Shot 2020-08-05 at 4.45.57 PM.png

Pretty hilarious. I guess the spirit wanted her to learn about the 1000 year reign of Christ on the earth. And I guess we missed the part where we had to type something and put “null” somehow I don’t know. On that note, if anyone here wants to know more about the millennium, me and Elder Hansen would be thrilled to share what we know with you!

2 - When I get really bored in a zoom I send spanish jokes into the chat and everyone dies. Here are some of the jokes I put:

Que hace un pez?
-nada
What do you say when your dad leaves for the city?
-CIU-DAD
¿Cuál es la fruta más divertida?
-Naranja ja ja ja
¿Qué dijo la tina mexicana?
-Yo soy la tina

That last one I got a thumbs up ovation. Hermana Israelson usually likes to avoid encouraging my unfocused behavior, but she was so proud of me and it wasn’t until like a minute after I sent it in the chat that she understood it but she laughed really hard.
Screen Shot 2020-08-05 at 6.48.13 PM.png

3 - Spanish is going really well. I’ve learned more spanish in 4 weeks than 4 years in school. My teacher said that me and Elder Hansen sound like we’ve been on our missions for 6 months teaching spanish which is awesome to hear. I just need to work out the conjugations more and expand my vocabulary, but I can understand what people say to me and can keep a conversation flowing well. Just want to learn new words so I can sound more fluent. Super stoked Elder Hansen is my comp because we’re at the exact same level in spanish. We’ve been doing better in our spanish TRC’s than our english ones. Also Elder Hansen drank Coke yesterday. Please keep him in your prayers.
Screen Shot 2020-08-06 at 4.31.47 PM.png

4 - Yesterday Hermana Israelson couldn’t make it so we had to combine with another district. It was madness. I don’t know why, but seeing a guy you don’t know on zoom creates bad feelings. My district was not having it. Yea we’re supposed to be christlike, but there were some competitive vibes going around, everyone trying to prove that they're the alpha male. It was pretty calm at first, until one of the Elders from the other district (Elder Thompson) set his profile picture as my boy Elder Snow from our district with a pen up his nose. I was furious. Elder Hansen officially declared war on August 7th, 2020, at approximately 7:28:14 pm. I took a screenshot of Elder Thompson and put myself in his room, then completely turned myself into him and changed my name to “hermana thompson”. The next couple hours was just them screenshotting us and trying to roast us in spanish in the chat. We won obviously. I got put into one-on-one breakout rooms with a couple of them and they are all super chill when it’s just one. But all together it gets competitive. It was also probably more competitive because it was Hermano Hernandez teaching and both districts wanted him to like them more than the other. At the end of the call though Hermano H said he likes us more. Let’s go baby!!!----DISCLAIMER----District two may have lost the battle, but let it be known that they are all fantastic, christlike young men. Most likely. If we had the chance to know them better I’m sure we’d be great friends.

5 - Yesterday me and two of my favorite people (Elder Andrew Smith and Elder Truman Pugsley) went to five guys which was neat. It was a spiritual feast. But then the music in the restaurant started to get a little too upbeat and talked about romantic feelings which was scary. We wanted to go and tell them to turn it down, but instead we just plugged our ears while eating our burgers. Also don't mind the leg.

6 - Okay cool spiritual thought real quick. So most of you know that before I graduated and started my mission, I went to Lancaster CA to sell pest control. While I was down there, I talked to lots of people about the restored gospel. Yesterday I was thinking about some of the people I talked to, and just had a thought that I should give them a call and see if I could schedule a zoom lesson. I called two people, and they both said we can teach them. How awesome is that?! And my boys (shoutout to Talmage, Troy, and Joseph) are still in California selling so I can have them run stuff over there if I need to. Pretty neat. I’m looking forward to talking with them again! Make sure to keep Frieda and Urijah in your prayers.

7 - This week has also been a spiritual feast. I don’t have any doubts in my mind that this church is true. It’s an amazing feeling. I think being a missionary makes that extra clear. I’ve done a lot of study in the Bible and “A Marvelous Work and a Wonder” by LeGrand Richards. It’s insane. The Bible is just as strong of a testament that this is Christ’s church as the Book of Mormon is. If anyone wants to talk religiously, hit me up. I love the church and I love that I get to study all day everyday. The time is flying by and I wish I had more time in the day to study.

Also I got my flight plans!!! Me and Elder Pugsley fly out at 6 am on August 25th so that’s awesome. Gonna be a good time.

Love all you guys and would love to hear how it’s going back there in good ol’ Utah….oh wait

Week 3 - MTC

Alright you guys, what a week haha. The time is actually flying by, Less than two years to go baby!!! This email might be a bit long but I promise that you’ll feel the spirit if you read it all. JUST KIDDING most of this email is just funny stuff that happened this week so if you like true comedy, you can read it haha. Don’t worry though, I’ll add a spiritual thought at the end so you can all walk away feeling spiritually edified. My emails won’t be this long in the field, but I’m very bored and have a lot of time on my hands soooooo I figure why not just tell you guys everything haha.

1 - Meeting my district
2 - Music problems
3 - Serving the people of park city
4 - Zoom experience
5 - New investigator
6 - Testimony

1 - This week was actually really neat and I have some funny/cool experiences to share. So last P-day me and my district met up in person. It was the weirdest thing ever. After staring at their faces for two weeks and seeing them in person, it felt like meeting celebrities. But it was also whack because you don’t know how tall each elder is on the zoom call, and you just subsciously assume they’re a certain height based on the length of their face so seeing their actual heights was terrifying. To prepare myself mentally, I tried to ask how tall everyone was, but I mixed up two of the elders who told me their heights. I thought Elder Nelson was 5’4’’, and Elder Willis was 6’4’’, when in reality elder nelson is a giant and elder willis looks like a little irishman. Anywho, a lot of our P-day was spent with me just trying to comprehend that mixup.

2 - Another funny thing this week has been my music. So as you all prolly know I can’t go a day without listening to all my favorite songs, but have had to for the past couple weeks because I’m a missionary. On Sunday, I listened to music for the first time in two weeks, and it was “For The Beauty of the Earth” by MoTab (or TabCoAtTempSq). It brought tears to my eyes haha. I’ve never heard anything so beautiful in mi vida. But in my library, the song that plays right after “for the beauty of the earth” is “The Force Theme” by a band called “Galactic Empire”. Galactic Empire is a band that just does remixes of star wars music but it’s all heavy metal guitar, so right after I’m feeling the peace of Motab, galactic empire comes in insanely loud playing irreverent music and every time I get a mini heart attack. It gets me every time.

3 - So in my email last week I mentioned how I wanted to do a better job of “representing Christ”, which I got the opportunity to prove it this week. So my whole fam and extended family was headed up to park city to the marriott mountainside resort, and since I can’t be alone and my grandparents were going too, I had to come up as well. I had LOTS of opportunity to get weird looks. In the lobby my gpa asked me to stay with our luggage while he got the room keys, so I was standing right by the elevators for 15 minutes while lots of people moved in and out. One kid whispered very loudly to his mom “mom, look, it’s a missionary!”. Not gonna lie for a second I felt like superman, the way he said it. But most people just looked at my nametag, looked at me, and then tried to avoid interacting with me in fear that I would try and give them a book of mormon or challenge them to be baptized. Even a baby someone was holding, no joke stared at my nametag for a sec, and then looked at me directly in the eyes in the most judgmental way possible. I was like “what the heck kid” but I got over it real quick so don’t worry. But I stopped minding it. I’ve had a whole hotel room to myself, so it’s nice and quiet and I’m mostly just in there most of the day. I do have to walk through the main area of the hotel to get food at my grandparents room, so I see random people then. The other day I was going to get food, and no joke there were like 10-15 girls my age in bikinis about to go swimming or something gathered right through the area I was about to walk through. I stopped, not knowing what to do, and they all looked at me. A couple of them started giggling and whispering, and I wanted to die. I couldn’t just walk away, so I said something hilarious like “howdy” and walked through them trying to stare straight ahead and avoid any sort of eye contact. It was horrible. I need a companion. My older bro Joe came in town for the week though, so in the mornings we went and played frisbee. Joseph also was able to share with me a lot of stuff to help me on the mission. If you watched “The House” video, you saw how desperate he was to teach me. If anything this week our roles got flipped. He was sitting on the couch (lazy bum) on his phone, while I was in a white shirt and tie asking him when we could go over stuff. Dad, you need to put a time limit for “mutual” on his phone. That app is bad news.

4 - As far as zoom goes, this week was also pretty good. I had a call with one of my teachers yesterday and she told me that I’m “the leader of the group” and that when I’m focused spiritually, so is everyone else. Buttt, when I’m not focused nobody else is either. I think I got everyone’s respect when I beat them in spikeball and ultimate frisbee last week, but I agree that I seem to be able to control the dynamic of the group pretty well. So I need to be more focused haha. There’s this light behind me in my hotel room that I pretend to eat during class, and I guess that can be distracting too.
Screenshot (38).png
One elder made a meme about it.

elderwridescenememe.jpg
Since I’m the one known for having fun, when someone else takes it too far, everyone thinks it’s me. I’m pretty good at knowing when to have fun and when to be serious most of the time. Yesterday Hermana Israelson was sharing her screen with us going over spanish, and some dude (cough cough elder farley) posted the entire “tragedy of darth plagueis the wise” all over the screen. If you don’t know what I’m talking about go watch revenge of the sith or just google “tragedy of darth plagueis the wise”. It’s a tragic story haha. Normally I would have thought that to be hilarious, but she was already annoyed with us so that about did it. She stopped screen sharing and looked at all of us and it was dead silent. Then elder snow was like “my money’s on elder wride” and I was like “I swear it wasn’t me” but nobody believed me and then I interrogated everyone and found out it was elder farley. Then (don’t tell elder f) I messaged hermana israelson and ratted him out haha. Had to clear my name.

5 - Alright it’s time to get spiritual. So this week my dad was on whatsapp with someone from my older brother Jose’s mission who speaks spanish, so my dad told me to say something in spanish. I told him my missionary purpose in spanish and then at the end challenged him to be baptized for whatever reason. He’s not a member of the church, but made good progress with joe while he was down there. Anywho, one thing led to another and next thing you know me and elder H were teaching him in spanish. My spanish is honestly not bad. We talked the whole time in just spanish, and at the end we asked him if he had any other questions. He said no, so I said “como podemos ayudarle a prepararse para el bautismo?” Or in english, how can we help you prepare for baptism? I mean if he had no questions, it made sense to ask him that. We talked about it for a bit more, and I told him to read 2 nephi 31 and pray to God if he should get baptized. We are gonna follow up with him next week. If he says yes, i have no idea what we’re gonna do.

6 - This week like the last two has been one of the strongest times I’ve felt the spirit. It’s also been some of the most temptation I’ve ever felt in my life. Me and my man Elder Hansen were talking about this too. We both thought that becoming a missionary would save us from temptation, or at least decrease it. I thought it would be easier I guess, but sadly have discovered that it is wayyyyyyy harder. Satan knows the good that missionaries do, and he’s still gonna give it all he’s got. That’s why now, more than ever, I need to do those things every day that invite the spirit, because I got little devils trying to get at me every single day and if I’m not constantly nourishing my testimony, I’m gonna lose it. Thomas S. Monson said “Regarding one’s testimony, remember, that which one willingly shares he keeps, while that which he selfishly keeps he loses. . . . Teach and testify. There is no better combination.”

I know that I will be able to resist temptation during my mission. I’ve been living a certain way my whole life, so Satan will have a lot harder time getting at me through that. His most effective way to keep me from sharing the gospel is by keeping me from opening my mouth. If I don’t share my testimony, I’m gonna forget I have one. I’m here to preach the gospel, and it needs to be something I’m always doing. It remind me of a scripture from JSH that says,

“It seems as though the adversary was aware, at a very early period of my life, that I was destined to prove a disturber and an annoyer of his kingdom; else why should the powers of darkness combine against me?”

That gave me chills when I read that for the first time. It’s apparent to me that I’m going to be a great annoyer of Satan's kingdom as well, and he would love for me to forget what I know to be true.

If there’s one thing that the MTC has taught me so far, it’s that the Book of mormon it true. I promise it’s true. THE EVIDENCE IS OVERWHELMING. It’s everywhere, and people start to forget that’s true when they stop reading it. It’s all about Jesus Christ. Multiple times this week I’ve read or heard something that gives me chills and I get continuing confirmation that this is real. And if the BOM is true, Joseph Smith was a prophet (which he was), and if Joseph smith was a prophet, the restoration is real, temples are real, the priesthood is real, and everything falls into place. If you love Jesus, you’ll love the BOM. This church is like a light in the darkness in this world, and Jesus Christ is going to come. The signs of Christ’s coming are evident everywhere you look, and there’s a lot more death and crazy stuff that needs to happen before then. Christ also needs a people that will be ready to receive him, which is why I am doing this. I said last week how being a missionary is hard because of the person I’m representing, which is true, but the mission is also the best because of that too. I am able to make promises to people that, if I am guided by the spirit, will come true. I have that authority right now to teach, preach, and baptize. I’m so excited to do that. The church is true, and if you want to know if it’s true you will.

I read a really cool scripture in Alma during my personal study. This is right after King Lamoni has returned from his deep sleep and spiritual conversion. It says:

“[Ammon] knew that the dark veil of unbelief was being cast away from his mind, and the light which did light up his mind, which was the light of the glory of God, which was a marvelous light of his goodness- yea, this light had infused such joy into his soul, the cloud of darkness having been dispelled, and that the light of everlasting life was lit up in his soul, yea, he knew that his had overcome his natural frame, and he was carried away in God-”

This exact feeling that is described here is found in the knowledge that Jesus Christ is our savior, who atoned for the sins of the world. That feeling is found in what this church teaches. I promise that, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!

As always, I’d love to hear from any of you guys. Love you all

PS - Just wanted to add a couple of neat spiritual things I found this week. The church's youtube is fuego. I spend an hour a day at least just watching these videos. If you're bored and want spiritual vibes, give them a watch
Plan of Happiness
The Second Coming pt. 2 - side note, the stuff in these second coming videos comes from D&C. It's cool to see all the prophecies made start to get checked off the list, like how when Joseph Smith predicted the civil war in an insane amount of detail in D&C 87.
I could post dozens of more videos but I'll start with those
Love you guys and have hope you have a fantastic weekend
