Man vs Spider

Hey guys. This week started off pretty good but got progressively worse. But some exciting stuff happened so here we go haha

Two drunk guys

On our way back to the apt one night we stopped to talk to a guy. We didn’t know it before, but he was quite drunk. As we were talking to him he would keep shaking our hands. Like every 10-15 seconds he would say “gracias hermanos” and shake our hands again. Then another drunk guy came out of the alley nearby and they both started talking to us and shaking our hands. I was enjoying it. We asked them if we could share a message. They didn’t really process what was said and kept talking. But then they said that they wanted to pray with us. Then they grabbed our hands and we made a little prayer circle. Two drunk dudes and two missionaries holding hands in a circle. I wasn’t really sure what was going on or who was supposed to be praying, so after we stood there for a little bit I just started to pray. They shouted “amen” and stuff during the prayer which was good. Then one of the drunk guys hijacked the prayer and started to talk. Eventually it ended and we all stopped holding hands, except for the drunk guy on my left. He didn’t let go of my hand so I just stood there holding his hand for a bit. It was just a funny experience. Obey the word of wisdom kids.

President Interviews

We had president interviews this week which was great. We walked like 30 minutes to the chapel for interviews, and right as we were walking up to the gate, President pulled up in his car. He pointed to the gate for us to unlock it for him, but we didn’t have a key for this church building. Elder Lugo knew that, and turned to me and said with his spanish accent, “you just lost the best opportunity of your life”. But I decided I could just try the key I had anyways. And it worked! I was able to open the gate for Presidente Breton. It was quite nice.

But interviews were great and President Breton is the best! He is really happy with the work me and Elder Lugo have been doing here. It's nice to feel appreciated.

Man vs Spider

One night this week we left the window in our living room open which wasn’t very smart because the next morning there were hundreds of mosquitos everywhere. So I spent the morning killing as many mosquitos as I could with my zapper thing. After killing a bunch, I went to my closet and saw something moving in the back. So I ran into the other room and grabbed my bug catcher. I came back, and there in the back of my closet was a tarantula. It was nuts! But I was prepared. I quickly was able to catch it with my bug catcher. But this thing was massive and I didn’t want to crush it because that would be nasty. After a little bit, we decided to try and burn it. So while Elder Lugo held the bug catcher, I grabbed a lighter and some mosquito repelent and lit it up. It was so sick! First the tarantula got lit on fire but then, tragically, the whole net on the bug catcher got set on fire too. So I’m gonna have to make a new one. But we successfully killed it. The rest of the day I don’t know why but I was just replaying in my head the scene of Hagrid from Harry Potter crying at Aragog's funeral. Someone should go watch that clip for me.

Teaching People

I’m still really really overwhelmed with all of the people we're visiting. Like I don’t know how to help them all. We did have 9 people come to church again this week which was good. Also it’s kinda funny because most all of them were people who we didn’t think were gonna go, and all the elect people didn’t show up. Even though we spent our morning going to each of their houses trying to wake them up. Oh well.

One of the elect people that came to church was this guy named Isaac. He’s from haiti and only speaks English and Hatian Creole. So I felt kinda bad for him not being able to talk to anyone at church. I did my best to translate for him during sacrament meeting though. He’s cool.

Another cool thing was that we’ve been able to get a lot of members helping us out with lessons. Yesterday we had a great member come to all of our lessons in person. Having a member to help testify of what we’re teaching is really powerful.

Our friend Jeremy is still coming to church all the time but is wanting to push his baptismal date back. But our friend Joan is wanting to get baptized. Joan and Jeremy are friends so we’re going to try and do it on the same day so that they can support each other.

There’s honestly so much to do and I’m pretty overwhelmed but we're staying busy which has been really good.

Spiritual Thought

So this week was tough but I know I’m doing my best. I’ve been praying really hard for the Lord to help me figure out what it is that I’m missing and what it is that I can improve on. Still haven’t gotten an answer, so hopefully I can figure that out soon. I want to be the best missionary I can be and I just feel like I fall so short all the time and I get really really discouraged. So these scriptures in D&C 6 were good for me to read.

33 Fear not to do good, my sons, for whatsoever ye sow, that shall ye also reap; therefore, if ye sow good ye shall also reap good for your reward.

34 Therefore, fear not, little flock; do good; let earth and hell combine against you, for if ye are built upon my rock, they cannot prevail.

35 Behold, I do not condemn you; go your ways and sin no more; perform with soberness the work which I have commanded you.

36 Look unto me in every thought; doubt not, fear not.

37 Behold the wounds which pierced my side, and also the prints of the nails in my hands and feet; be faithful, keep my commandments, and ye shall inherit the kingdom of heaven. Amen.

Also another thought - this week I got an email from a friend from high school that I heard from in a while. Then all of these memories just came back and it was so weird to think that I even existed before the mission. I was remembering stuff that happened before the mission and thinking “man how did I forget that?”. I think that when we step through the veil we’ll feel the exact same way with who we were before this life. We’ll remember stuff so clearly and be like “man how did I forget all of that?”. I’m really excited for that day when everything will make sense!

Ciao

And for your enjoyment if you got this far - here is a little bonus section that Ethan sent to us today over facebook messenger, with the note of "I had a traumatizing experience but don't want to put it in my weekly. So here it is for y'all because I feel like I have to tell it to somebody." I want this to be part of his blog book record, so here it is. Pretty funny. Ethan sure has come a long way from his teenager days of not wanting to use the hand towel that his little siblings touched!

The Toilet Hunt Elder Ethan K. Wride It was about 5 o’clock on Friday, August 20, 2021. We had just finished a rough lesson. It was one of those lessons where you start and then the investigators hijack it and just talk about their lives for an hour. Then at the end of the “lesson”, we were really trying to get out of there so we could be on time for our other appointments. But, they weren’t done with us yet, and brought out some bread and some homemade “juice”. I knew that my body would prefer not to eat it, but we had to go, so I hurry and scarfed the bread and juice down as fast as I could. About 15 minutes later, I could feel that my stomach was having some difficulty, and was going to need to have some alone time. I told Elder Lugo that I needed to use a bathroom, and he laughed. We were nowhere near the church or the apartment, and finding a bathroom wouldn’t be easy. But I knew that I had to do it. Toilet #1 - I walked into a church where a lady was sweeping. They are christian, so I thought it would be an easy win. I asked the lady who was sweeping if they had a bathroom I could use. Without looking at me, she pointed to a door nearby. I opened the door. Yes, there was a toilet. But that was it. No sink, no toilet paper, just a toilet. And the toilet was so close to the door that I couldn't shut it all the way. The lights didn't work either so I couldn't even see where I was pooping if I did it in privacy, which meant that if I wanted to poop everyone was gonna have to watch. I stood there analyzing the situation for a minute. I didn’t want the lady to be offended that I chose not to use it, so I tried to stand in the little toilet room and attempted to close the door, which I couldn’t. Finally I just walked out. I told the lady “gracias”, and continued my search. Toilet #2 - I walked up to another lady sitting outside her house if I could use her bathroom. She said that it was broken, but referred me to talk to a guy in a colmado across the street and that he may have a bathroom available. This led me to “toilet” #3. “Toilet” #3 - I say “toilet” because it was not a toilet. I asked the guy at the colmado where I could go to relieve myself, and he said “poo poo o pee pee?”. I didn’t want to admit to him that I was going #2 and it wasn’t going to be pretty out of fear that he wouldn’t let me use his bathroom, so I said “pee pee”. He then pointed outside to a group of cement blocks, where behind the blocks was a shack. He told me to go there. I was already skeptical, but figured I may as well take a look. It took a while to open the door because it was nailed into the wood (the only way they could close it I guess), but I finally got it opened. There was just a cement floor with a little hole, probably the size of a bottle cap. I had barely got a look when I said to myself “nope” and headed out to continue the search. At this point, Elder Lugo was laughing pretty hysterically at every one of my attempts. But I was determined to use a toilet that would clean me up, not make it worse. Toilet #4 - We walked for a bit and found some people sitting outside their house. I chose them because their house looked somewhat orderly. We asked one of the guys two questions. First, we asked, “can we teach you about Jesus?”. He said sure. Now that I think about it, we probably should have asked question two first because of how urgent the matter was. So then we asked question #2. “Can we use your bathroom?”. I said “we” because I didn’t want to be singled out. He looked very surprised, but said “ok” and went in before us to clean up I guess. After a couple minutes He came out and motioned for us to go in. So I went in to use the bathroom. This was definitely the best option thus far, but still wasn’t great. The toilet had previous remains in it, which surprised me because the guy had gone in before me to clean up. Now that I think of it, he may have gone in before me to use it. Who knows. Anyways, so I looked for a place to flush it. There was no way to flush. I was about to see if I could lift the top of the toilet off to try and flush it manually, but then quickly noticed that there was no toilet paper anywhere in the bathroom. Then I checked the sink. To sum it up, it was broken. And even if it worked, there was no soap. After a couple minutes, I knew I had to keep looking for another toilet. But I was running out of time. My stomach was not happy. Then suddenly I realized that I had to pretend I was using the bathroom because everyone was waiting outside for me and could hear everything I was doing. In a moment of panic, I pulled out my water bottle and began to pour some into the toilet, trying to create the correct sound. Thinking I had done a good job, I opened the door, and everyone was just sitting there in complete silence. I could tell Elder Lugo was fighting trying not to laugh. I did not use the bathroom. I knew it, and I knew that they knew it, but we all just pretended that I did and I left.

I would have taken down the guys number before leaving but I was too humiliated to ever want to see him again. Toilet #5 - At this point, my body was starting to panic. I decided I needed to play it safe and stop by the house of a member. So went to a member house and asked if I could use their bathroom. He asked me a farmiliar question. “Poo poo o pee pee?”. Remembering what had happened last time I answered that question incorrectly, but still not wanting to admit that I was going to be in there for a while, I shrugged and said “Honestamente, no estoy totalmente seguro”. He laughed and pointed to where the bathroom was. There was just a curtain of privacy. I looked inside the bathroom, and the toilet was missing the toilet seat. And there were previous remains in there yet again. Nevertheless, I decided I was going to make it work. But there was no way to flush the previous remains. Neither was there a way to wipe myself after going. And yes, there was no sink. Suddenly, the curtain opened and Elder Lugo handed me some napkins that he said were from the member. I pondered the whole situation, but just couldn’t bring myself to it. Alas, bathroom #5 also failed me. At this point, I was freaking out. I decided we were going to have to make a speed walk to the apartment, because if I ran, it would make it worse. However on the speed walk to the apt I decided it would be faster to go to the church. Elder Lugo was really enjoying all of this. A little too much. As I speed walked, I was remembering all of the people I’ve contacted who I’ve shaken hands with. I was stressed out. After a while, with the church building in view, my body timer went off. I knew I only had two minutes until the beast was unleashed. So I broke into a full sprint and left Elder Lugo behind. Normally, this would be against mission rules, but it was an emergency. Toilet #6 - I never use a toilet without covering the toilet seat with toilet paper first to be safe. But this time, I had no choice because of the timer. I sat immediately upon it. It worked quite well, but the door lock was broken so I had to stick my pen in it to keep the door shut. While I was in there Elder Lugo was shouting stuff at me from the door with his broken english like “how’s it going?” and “is it coming out okay?”. It was humiliating, but there was nothing I could do. After a while, the problem was fixed. I was able to wash my hands too. When I left the bathroom, there were elders outside who looked worried. But I said "nevermind, I am well enough off".

-THE END-
Corey's comment: That brings back a lot of memories
Hyrum said: I laughed hardest at "Nevermind, I am well enough off" (a quote from Joseph Smith to his mother after he experienced the first vision, haha)

Ethan also commented today "It's also recently occurred to me I'm out shaking hands all day with these people, and I did not find many sinks, soap, or hand towels in my visit borrowing their bathrooms today. I'm going to make sure to try and always fist bump..."

Guess What!?

Hey guys! Que lo que? This week was pretty alright. Yesterday I had a pretty insane moment and I am proud of myself. If you don’t have time to read anything, you should at least go read that. It was pretty epic. It will be near the end of this email.

Living in a foreign land as a missionary leads to some pretty funny stuff.

Street Contact

There’s these kids that are usually in the street and we stop and talk to them. I always try and entertain them with something. I tried to do a trick where you have a coin in your hand and you hide it and then pull it from behind their ear but I was wearing a short sleeve shirt and forgot that I couldn’t hide it in my sleeve so the coin just fell on the ground. They still thought it was cool though haha. There’s another trick I actually do know so I was able to show them that and they liked it.

But now when they see me they expect me to have something to show them. Yesterday I was out of ideas, but I didn’t want to disappoint them so I searched my pockets. I pulled out a pen and without really thinking I unscrewed it and reassembled it so I could shoot the lid of it off like a gun using the spring. I accidentally launched it right into a kids face. He was totally fine don’t worry. It was just funny. But then we couldn’t find the spring so people came over with flashlights and eventually we found it. I felt kinda dumb but it was good.

Food

The food situation here has gotten better. I’ve gotten used to the selection they have at the grocery store, but still feel a little uncomfortable looking down at my grocery list and seeing the words “milk powder”. Just doesn’t sit right. I feel like I shouldn’t be eating that stuff. But it’s actually pretty efficient. You only have to buy a bag of powder once every couple weeks so that’s nice. Except I haven’t even been able to use the milk powder because the ants here are demons and they invaded my bag of fruit loop knock offs.

But the trick to surviving is eating out. An average meal is between 200-250 pesos which is less than 4 american dollars. It’s pretty cheap. So usually we cook something for lunch at the apartment and then on our way home for dinner we stop by a fast food place. So that’s fun

Tormenta

This week we had a “tormenta tropical”. It just means “tropical storm” but tormenta sounds super intense. But it was big enough that we weren’t allowed to leave our apartments for a day. We also didn’t have power. By the end of the night our phone was out of battery and we couldn’t charge it, and we couldn’t go outside, so we literally had nothing to do. But it was fun.

Chino/Feo/Mono

All the people here have been so nice. Especially the kids. They are awesome. But the other day we were walking and this little girl who was probably 5 or 6 was glaring at me. I waved and then she stuck her tongue out at me. Then she was like “feo!” (ugly). That kind of hurt my feelings haha. Jk I’m fine. So we just kept walking. Then from behind me I could hear in the distance “Feo! Mono! Feo! Mono!” (ugly monkey). So that was nice. A lot of people call me “chino” though. I don’t know why they think I’m chinese.

Bug catcher

Hahahah I was reviewing the email before I send it and the title "bug catcher" was accidentally put in as "but catcher". Haha man that's funny. Good times.

But taking care of bugs has been going good for the most part. I do have some nasty bug bits on my right pinky that have been driving me crazy all week and still isn’t healing. Some of the bugs are too big to use my electric swatter with so this week I made a big bug catcher thing by taking a container and then I “fastened it upon the end of a pole” (Alma 46:12). It’s been working good. I’ll attach a picture.

Cockroach

I had my first big cockroach this week. We killed him pretty quick. Then I went to the bathroom. When I came back, the cockroach remains were gone. I asked Elder Lugo what he did with the dead cockroach and he said to check my bag.

I still don’t fully understand his sense of humor and when he’s kidding verses when he’s being serious, but I told him that if I check my bag and find a dead cockroach I wasn’t gonna be happy. I still haven’t found anything yet so we should be good.

Fasting

Yesterday we fasted that our friend Jeremy would know whether or not he should be baptized. And yesterday was hotter than normal so fasting was rough. As we were walking to Jeremy’s house I jokingly said to Elder Lugo that we should act extra exhausted to make Jeremy feel sorry for us and want to get baptized. Then when we saw Jeremy, Elder Lugo limped up to him dragging his left leg behind him as though it wasn’t working, and then said in an out-of-breath tone, “no hemos comido casi nada por ti” (we haven’t eaten hardly anything for you). Probably not the best thing to have said but it was fine and kinda funny. In the lesson Jeremy said he does feel good about baptism. So hopefully we can get that all sorted out. Fasting works!

Las drogas

A couple weeks ago we had a lesson with a guy who wants to get baptized as well but has some things he needs to do to get there. In our last lesson we asked him what parts of the word of wisdom he was struggling with. He was like “well there’s tea, coffee, tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs”. We sat there quietly for a second. It was kinda awkward.

But it’s funny because we saw him again yesterday and asked him if he has been able to give up illegal drugs yet. He jumped up and was like “que!?”. Apparently in our last lesson he thought we were asking him what things the word of wisdom prohibits, not which ones he was taking that he shouldn’t. So he’s doing good. Hopefully he can get baptized soon.

La Obra

Quick update on some of our friends we're teaching- We had 9 of our friends come to church last week which was awesome. We are working with all of them towards baptism. A big problem though is people not being married to their spouse so we're still trying to figure out how to get over that. But there's some really elect people here! Christopher (mentioned him last week) is cruising through the book of mormon. I love having lessons with people where they ask questions like "why did Nephi kill Laban?". It's just so nice to see someone really digging into it. And Christophers cousin Dioscarolin (not sure if I spelled that right) is wanting to get baptized too. We had a great lesson with her where she was like "if we need to be baptized to go to heaven, what happened to all of those who didn't get baptized?". Best question ever! I don't know why more people don't ask that. So we talked about baptism for the dead and she really enjoyed it. But honestly I can't keep track of all these people and it's been a lot of work. But that's why I came so it's been great.

🥇Epic Moment🥇

And now, for this epic story.

I mentioned this last week, but the music here is just awful. No offense to los dominicanos. There’s like three songs that everybody plays over and over and over again. Every other house has a speaker blasting it and the cars that drive by have it too. I don’t know if it’s the same in other foreign countries, but it gets pretty obnoxious sometimes.

Next to our apartment there’s a big baseball field and a bar. So there’s constantly people there having a good time and being noisy. Yesterday there were more people than usual. The music was so loud. They had these giant speakers that you’d have at like a football stadium attached to the back of this trailer and were blasting it at full volume. And then there’s crowds of people just hanging out with their drinks right in front of the speakers. I don’t understand how they do it.

As we were walking through the crowd of people to get the apartment, the concrete ground beneath our feet literally shook. That’s how loud this music is.

So we were walking through these people. It was about 7 oclock at night. At this point I was so fed up with the music haha. I can’t fathom how they can stand to listen to the exact same songs over and over and over again. And the lyrics are awful. They are just screaming about drugs and sex and stuff. There is so much good music out there and this is what they’re listening to? And they, unlike us, have permission to listen to whatever they want. I just don’t understand it.

When we finally got through the crowd, I stopped with a genius idea. I turned to Elder Lugo and said “I’m gonna find the guy with the aux”. He thought I was kidding and laughed, but I had never been more serious. So we turned around and went straight into the belly of the beast.

We walked through some crowds of people and found this one guy who looked like he might be in charge. I asked him if I could change the song and play some music I thought he would like. He told us that his brother was running the music and where we could find him. So we walked through some more crowds and made it to the guy who was running the music. We could barely hear each other because of how loud the music was, but I was like “que lo que hermano. Can I request a song?”. And he handed me the phone that was hooked up to the music that could be heard across all the Republica Dominicana.

I’ve seldom felt so much power in my life. As much as I wanted to play something like Motab, I knew I needed to pick something that was clean but that was also kinda groovy. So I looked up “Ain't no Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terril and it started to play.

It was one of the most epic moments of my life. If you don’t know that song you should go listen to it. The beginning especially is really cool. The song started, I looked up at the guy and gave him a fist bump. We turned around to leave and I immediately made eye contact with an old dominican man. He was digging it. He looked at me and gave me a toothless smile and a thumbs up. He was also probably pretty drunk but that’s not important. It was so epic! Then we walked through the crowd again and made our exit. We had a lesson to get to so we didn’t have time to see everyone's reaction, but it was great.

I felt like a superhero walking away from an explosion.

Well after all of these non spiritually related things I should probably share something spiritual with you guys.

Spiritual Thought

I have learned a LOT as a missionary. A lot to come still. But one of the things I have noticed is that the adversary works in small steps. Here’s a story to illustrate.

When I was growing up, I remember microwaving a bowl of popcorn one day. To my dismay, the whole bag came out burnt. I put it in a bowl and started to look for pieces that weren’t burnt. There were just a couple. I was disappointed, but left the bowl there with all the burnt popcorn and went on with my day.

Whenever I was in the kitchen I would stop and check the bowl again and look for pieces that weren’t burnt. It was great! I always happened to find a couple more pieces. This happened throughout the day.

By the end of the day, I came back to the bowl, and realized that I had eaten nearly the entire bowl of burnt popcorn. It blew my mind.

The adversary works in the same way you guys! It starts off little. We may pick and choose a bit with the commandments, rationalizing that it’s okay and not technically wrong. Then time goes on, and we gradually move farther and farther along the path that leads, in the end, to unhappiness. But we hardly realize it because we are moving at such a slow and steady pace. And then finally, we realize that we have gone too far, but it’s too late. We’ve already eaten the metaphorical bowl of burnt popcorn.

But really it’s never too late. Because of the atonement of Jesus Christ, we can always find peace. But why even start down that road in the first place?

To sum up, I’ve just realized that like Nephi said, “by small and simple things are great things brought to pass”. This goes for things good and bad. Satan pulls away little by little, until he has such great hold on us that it’s really hard to shake loose.

So my invitation to you guys would be to stop now. Don’t even fiddle with anything that could lead you off the gospel path. Hold on to the iron rod for dear life. Cling to the gospel. Pray every day even if you don’t understand why it’s important. Read the Book of Mormon every day even if you’re not yet sure if it’s true. Partake of the sacrament EVERY WEEK even if it seems like it doesn’t make a difference. Trust in God and that if you give it time and are faithful, everything will work out just fine. I know they will if we keep the commandments.

I have a lot of questions but I really know that this is the true church of Jesus Christ. At this point, if this church isn’t true, God can’t exist. Nothing else makes sense to me. If there’s a God, then he has to have a church, and if he has a church, which one is it?

But like I’ve said before, the only way that I have come to know this is through the Book of Mormon. I testify along with millions of others that it’s really God’s book. And if that book came from God, Joseph Smith was a prophet, and this is the Church of Jesus Christ on earth to prepare the world for the second coming of Jesus Christ. Which is coming soon. Fingers crossed.

If any of you want stronger faith that God exists, go study Alma 30. It’s really great. Here’s a verse from it that I’ve always loved.

(Alma 30:44)

“Thou hast had signs enough; will ye tempt your God? Will ye say, Show unto me a sign, when ye have the testimony of all these thy brethren, and also all the holy prophets? The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator.”

Love you guys! Novemo

I Got Mugged

Haha jk I didn’t get mugged. Sorry to disappoint. I just thought that would get your attention. But if (when) I get mugged I will for sure let you guys know.

Weight Loss

I’m not totally sure and I’m a little scared to check but I think I’ve lost 10-15 pounds since getting here. Pretty fun! I saw a missionary that I hadn’t seen for a while and he was like “woah elder you’ve lost a lot of weight”. Since then I’ve paid a little more attention to my gut and yea I’m losing weight. But it’s okay that I’m losing some because I put on 40 since I came out. But just thought I’d let y’all know.

Cemetario

While we were street contacting we had some people to respond to on the phone but we didn’t want to get mugged with our phone out so we walked inside a cemetery that was nearby where it was more quiet and where nobody would bother us. We were there for probably 20 minutes but then when we came back to the gate to leave we saw that it was locked. So we got locked in the cemetery. We were gonna climb the wall but there were spikes everywhere. We had an appointment with a member who lived nearby so we called him and we’re like “hey were locked in the cemetery”. He laughed for a minute but then called a guy in Navarrette with a key and after a little while he came and let us out. But it was just really funny to stand there at the gate of the cemetery with people driving and walking by looking in at a gringo and dominican missionary locked inside. But it was fun!

¡Contactos en La Calle!

This week we got permission to street contact which was insane. So we’ve been going crazy with it. I kinda made a personal goal to stop literally everybody in the street and it’s been really fun. And the dominicans are super natural so it’s never awkward at all. You just walk up to them with a fist bump and say “que lo que!?” and you’re friends!

"I’m Still Learning Spanish"

Since we can now street contact we are put in more awkward situations where people ask for money. We talk for a bit and they are super nice and then start talking about all their problems and how they really need some pesos from us. They are usually talking to me when they ask haha. They think I’m loaded but really I’m barely surviving. But I’m a gringo so when they ask me for money I don’t want to be rude and say “NO” (because giving money is against mission rules) so instead I just stand there quietly for a second, look at my companion, look at the person and say, in english, “I’m sorry I’m still learning spanish”. Then they look confused and instead of bothering me they bother my companion who they know speaks spanish and ask him for money. That little trick has gotten me out of a couple situations.

There’s this one kid in the area that every time he sees us he’s like “dame cinco” (give me five). But 5 pesos only comes in coins so basically he’s asking us to give him change. The last time he was like “dame cinco” I responded with “ah, lo siento mi hermano. Solo tengo billetes.” (I’m sorry, I only have cash)

I felt kinda bad afterwards. It just came out. My dad had told me about one of his companions that did that and I couldn’t help it. But we’re gonna teach his family later tonight so I’ll make up for it.

Spanish VS English

There’s some people here who speak some english and they want to practice it, so when they see me they start talking in english. But I want to practice spanish, so I respond to them in spanish. It’s just been kinda funny to have these recurring conversations where they are speaking in english and me in spanish.

Elder Lugo

My comp is pretty great. He wears a wool vest almost every day which Is really weird because of how hot it is outside. I’m barely surviving without a wool vest. But yea he’s a great comp. I asked him to correct my spanish when I mess up so I could improve. Then a few days later after a companionship inventory I think he was kinda annoyed with me haha and he wrote a list of things I pronounce incorrectly on a napkin and handed it to me. Idk it was just really funny. But he’s great and a hard worker. It’s been a lot of fun!

Hace Calor

I’ve gotten used to the heat pretty well and now it’s not so bad. But the other day I went into an air conditioned room for one of the first times since being here which was at a regular temperature, and then leaving the room and feeling the insane wave of heat crash over me I realized how hot it actually is all the time. Poor Elder Lugo and his vest. I don’t know how he does it.

Si Dios Quiere

In the one month I have here in the DR, I have heard this phrase hundreds of times. It’s so annoying! Every time we invite someone to do something, especially come to church, they respond with, “ehhh si Dios quiere”. (if that’s what God wants). In other words, “ehhhhhhh I know I could and probably should, but I don’t feel like commiting right now because that would mean I would have to put forth more effort than I’m willing, but I also don’t want to hurt your feelings, so if it’s really that important I’ll just trust that God will go out of his way and make me be there”.

It’s just kinda frustrating sometimes. Of course God wants you to be there! But Satan doesn’t and if you’re not willing to put forth some effort to be there it’s gonna be hard for God to help you go. But yea there’s that.

Nuestros Quieridos Amigos

Navarrette is a great area. Other than the heat and lack of walmart, it’s great. I like how there’s no division in wealth. Like there isn’t a poor or rich area anywhere. You just find a piece of land and build on it. One thing that is still annoying though is the music haha. Everybody is constantly blasting music from their houses and cars. Normally it wouldn’t bother me but I am not kidding when I say that they play the same three songs on repeat.

But the people here are so amazing! We have some really really great friends we’re working with that are pretty elect. I wish I could write about everyone, but I don’t have time or the memory to do it. We talk to TONS of people every day. Plus those that we’re teaching already. I think the most lessons we’ve had in one day thus far was 11 or 12, all in person. So there’s a lot going on. That’s been one of the biggest challenges here is knowing who to spend your time with, because everybody is happy to talk to you. A big change from the US. No offense America.

Christopher

Christopher is a guy we met street contacting. It was late at night and the power was out in the whole city (a recurring problem) so it was really dark and we decided to head home. Then of course as I was walking I felt an impression to go visit a spot we had visited a couple days ago and invite whoever we met to come to church. I was annoyed and wanted to go home thinking that it probably wasn’t safe to be out right then anyways, so I said a quick prayer for God to let me know if I should go and try to share the gospel with those people. Of course anytime you ask God a question like “should I share the gospel”, he’s gonna say yes. I realized that I should do it so we sprinted a couple streets over and ended up meeting Christopher.

He’s super elect! After our first lesson on the restoration, Elder Lugo asked him to explain what we had taught in his own words to make sure he was paying attention. And he was totally on the same page which was great. And when we came back a few days later, we found him WITH his Book of Mormon! He didn’t even know we were coming by and he had his Book of Mormon on him. He had even marked a bunch of stuff and instead of reading the last chapter of Moroni, he read the entire book of Moroni. It was great!

He came to church yesterday too which was just awesome. I had never been so happy to see anyone walk into a church building. Because we meet a lot of great people, but coming to church is where most of them falter. But here he was at 7:45 in the morning ready to feel the spirit. It was awesome.

Marcus and Naylis

Marcus and his wife Nayelis we also found while street contacting. Our last lesson we taught the plan of salvation and you could see the wheels turning in their heads and could feel that they knew what we were teaching was true. They are both coming to church too! And they have two kids. So we’re gonna keep working with them and si Dios quiere, they’ll hopefully be baptized here soon.

La Iglesia es Verdadera

We had just finished a lesson with two of our other young friends, (Jonas y Antonio) that are working towards baptism, and they wanted to introduce us to their other friend that they want to get baptized with them. So we walked over and met their friend, and asked if we could talk to his parents. So the kid took us to his house. The mom seemed really pretty triggered that we were there. She asked what we wanted and then Jonas was like “can they baptize your kids?” or something like that and it was really awkward. She didn’t look too happy. We asked the mom if we could share a message with her and she looked even more upset and basically said “fine”. So she pulled out some chairs and we sat to talk with her.

We asked her if she had talked to missionaries in the past and she said “I know everything about you guys”. In my head I was like “pfft yee okey” because people say that a lot and then tell us how we pray to Joseph Smith or believe in three hour church (which isn’t true don’t worry) or something like that. But then she said “I was baptized when I was younger, my ex-husband was a missionary, I got sealed in the temple, I served as relief society president, primary president, etc…” and started to talk about her history in the church.

She didn’t make it totally clear why she left, but you could tell there was a lot of pain there. We sat quietly and would ask occasional questions. As time went by, her countenance started to change, and she started to talk about her past in the church fondly. She talked about the Book of Mormon, and looked at us smiling and said, “my favorite prophet is Nephi”. She talked about President Gordan B. Hinckley, and how much she loved him and everything he taught. She talked about how much she cried when he died too.

By the end of our visit, she was smiling from ear to ear, recounting stories of when she was in the church and how much she loved it. From what I could tell, this was a great elect daughter of God who still knows the gospel is true, but had been hurt in some way and has wandered off the path a little bit. We gave her a new copy of the Book of Mormon (it’s been like 15 years since she’s had one) and testified to her that it was true. She then was like “no Elderes, let me tell you about this book” and bore her testimony of it to us. It was really cool. We also talked to her about President Nelson and how he is a living prophet. It was actually kinda funny because when we introduced President Nelson I accidentally said that he is “una profeta” (female prophet) instead of “un profeta” (male prophet). She kinda jumped up in her chair and was like “wow things have really changed since I left!”. But Elder Lugo saved me and explained it.

But to sum up, it was a great faith building experience of the truthfulness of the gospel and the power of the Book of Mormon. She told us we can start teaching her son and that she is not against him getting baptized if that’s what he wants. Hopefully if he gets baptized we can help reactivate her!

Al Final

So in conclusion, things are good here in the DR. I’ve finally passed the big learning curve I think and now I’m able to work without not wanting to be there haha. We also took two mattresses we found in our apartment and made a couch! So that’s helped a lot too.

The hardest part lately is how long this whole mission is. I feel a little anxious to think that I have so much time left and so much work to do. But like the great Abe Lincoln said, “the best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time”. So I will just keep taking everything day by day and soon enough I’ll be back home with Elder Pugsley bowling higher than him and wishing I could be back on my mission.

Also whenever the mission feels like it’s too long, I like to read Ether 10:31-

“And he begat Heth, and Heth lived in captivity all his days. And Heth begat Aaron, and Aaron dwelt in captivity all his days; and he begat Amnigaddah, and Amnigaddah also dwelt in captivity all his days, and he begat Coriantum, and Coriantum dwelt in captivity all his days; and he begat Com.”

Love you all, nos vemos
